Exercise

The general health benefits of exercise are well known and the old cliche healthy body healthy mind, is essentially true. Lack of exercise can lead to obesity, diabetes, poor concentration and a host of other medical and behavioural problems. Structured exercise and plenty of opportunity for unstructured outdoor play is a vital ingredient to any child's well-being.

There are numerous exercise programs and while some simply improve general health others are designed to improve brain function through exercise. These include:

  • Brain Gym

Involves a general program of exercises designed to improve brain function and although they are not tailored to individuals the exercises are believed to have general health and brain function benefits.

    Information is available at www.braingym.org.au.

  • Martial Arts

The combination of exercise and discipline required to progress in martial arts may be of benefit to many children with attentional and behavioural problems.

  • Move To Learn

Uses a series of movements to open neurological pathways to enable every child to learn. A free interactive learning difficulties (LD) profile test provides an idea of the areas that need attention.

    Information is available at www.movetolearn.com.au.

Other specific exercise programs, which some parents claim have benefited their children, include trampolining, jogging and yoga.
