Treatments Must Match the Cause

The causes of inattentive, hyperactive and impulsive behaviours are many and varied and approaches to managing these behaviours must match the underlying cause. It is therefore essential for parents, teachers and specialists to adopt an holistic approach when helping children.

Any number of physical and medical problems like glue ear, sleep apnoea or poor sight can make it difficult and even impossible for a child to concentrate. A thorough general check up by a competent GP is a good starting point. It will help to eliminate possible explanations of inattentive behaviour.

Obviously no one approach or treatment will work for every child. Finding the right approach for your child will probably involve a frustrating and time consuming process of trial and error. It is also important to remember that curiosity, impulsivity and inattention are normal childhood behaviours and children mature at different rates.

Drug-free approaches may lead to improvements in a child's concentration and behaviour however no one treatment will benefit all children. For example fish oil may be of no benefit to children with an undetected hearing problem.
