Do AD(H)D drugs work?

Psycho-stimulants (like Speed, Cocaine, Dexamphetamine and Ritalin) when taken orally in low doses will temporarily sharpen focus in most people regardless of wether they have been diagnosed AD(H)D or not. As a result parents and teachers often see increased concentration and more compliant behaviour as immediate effects of 'medication'.

The changed behaviour is temporary. When the short term effects of the drugs wear off there are sometimes bounce or withdrawal effects that worsen AD(H)D type behaviours. Despite claims in drug-company funded research there is no plausible long-term evidence of improved educational outcomes. This is because AD(H)D drugs do not deal with the cause of behavioural and learning difficulties.
